Crime is on the rise again, but the Labour Government is cutting police numbers even further. Welcome to Brown's Britain. In Brown's Britain, the Government spends billions of pounds forcing law abiding people to carry ID cards while criminals go free. It's no joke.

Labour talk tough on crime, but fail to act. The last Conservative Government talked tough, but cut police numbers too.
That's why the Liberal Democrats will abolish Labour's expensive and pointless ID card scheme. We want to spend the money on things that will actually help ordinary law abiding people across the country.
We want to put 10,000 more police on patrol. We want to give local people the power to close down pubs and clubs that cause anti-social behaviour. We want to make prisons work to cut down on reoffending. |

It's time for a fresh approach on crime. Britain isn’t safe enough. Our prisons are bursting, town centres can be no-go areas at night, and we have real problems with drugs and alcohol.
Liberal Democrats will create community justice panels to give you a say in how offenders pay for their crimes. We’ll cut red tape for the police, and prisoners will work to pay for victim compensation. We’ll fix our immigration system with proper border checks, and help newcomers learn English.
Liberal Democrats will put 10,000 more police officers on the street paid for by scrapping the ID card scheme. We will make police forces accountable to elected authorities, which are able to defend local priorities, set budgets and vary taxes where necessary.

Local communities will have the power to tackle minor cases of anti-social behaviour through new community panels where offenders have to make amends to victims and communities through visible community sentences.
Liberal Democrats will focus prisons and detention onto the interests of victims. We will impose compulsory rehabilitation, training and paid work in prison, including a scheme in which a proportion of money earned will be paid into a common fund for victims. Prison-based work schemes will be expanded to provide previous offenders with realistic alternatives to crime, easing the pressure on the prison service and on the British tax payer. We will allocate resources to new secure mental health and drug treatment centres rather than new prisons.
Liberal Democrats will set up a 24–hour border force that would incorporate immigration, customs and police at all UK ports to stop the presence of guns on our streets. Local authorities and police would be given real power to tackle gun and gang crime locally. We will also ensure that areas where gun crime incidents are high are allocated additional resources.

We need a Government that spends money on catching criminals rather than on making you carry a piece of plastic in your pocket
Snooping not policing.
On the other hand a Lib Dem survey has found that surveillance powers designed to prevent crime and terrorism and have been used by local councils more than 10,000 times since 2004, research by the Liberals Democrats has found.
A survey of more than 180 councils discovered that:
- Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA) powers have been used 10,288 times in the last five years
- 1,615 council staff have the power to authorise the use of the RIPA
- 21% (340) of these staff are below senior management grade
- Just 9% of these authorisations have led to a successful prosecution, caution or fixed-penalty notice
